# Editing estimates and proposals

> Change line items, add-ons, photos, and sections directly in the preview

## Editing estimates and proposals

In manual edit mode — click the **pencil icon** in the preview's header — line items, add-ons, photo galleries, claim info, and text sections are editable in place. Saving creates a new draft version, the same as an AI edit. **A saved version is never changed**; every save adds a new one, so version history always takes you back.

### 1. Enter edit mode

1. Click the **pencil icon** in the preview header. Editable sections light up.
2. Make your changes, then **save** — a new **Draft** version is cut and a milestone card posts in chat.
3. To abandon changes, click **Discard** and confirm. Nothing sticks until you save.

### 2. Edit an estimate's line items

Click into an estimate section to open the estimate editor. At the top: the estimate's **name**, **description**, default **margin**, and whether it's marked **recommended** (for proposals with multiple quote options). Below is the line items table:

Retyping a linked line's description by hand makes it free text again — the link and option drop; the line's values stay. A line whose supplier price couldn't be fetched shows a warning badge naming the price it fell back to. Add and remove lines freely; the totals footer recalculates as you type, and an estimate must keep at least one line item to save. ### 3. Edit add-ons

The **Add-ons** section ("Enhance Your Project") holds optional extras the homeowner can select on the published proposal. Add one (name, description, price, margin), edit or delete, or drag to reorder. A customer's selection updates live on the published proposal without creating a new version — [What your customer sees](/features/what-your-customer-sees).

### 4. Edit photos and descriptions

Add or remove photos in a gallery section and edit the text under each — each photo carries one description, and your words replace the AI's. Hiding or clearing descriptions: [Photo descriptions](/features/photo-descriptions). Galleries can hold videos, which play on the digital proposal but are never included in PDF exports.

### 5. Edit claim info and text sections

On insurance projects, the **claim info** section carries the claim header — insured name, property address, carrier, claim and policy numbers, date of loss, type of loss. It prints on the claim documents, so confirm it before publishing (the wizard re-confirms the key fields — [Publishing your proposal](/features/publishing-your-proposal)). The hero and rich-text sections — cover, intro letter, custom text blocks from your [proposal layout](/features/proposal-layouts) — are editable as formatted text.

### 6. What saving does to a published proposal

Versions move **Draft** → **Published** → **Signed** (retail) or **Approved** (insurance) or **Funded**. Editing never disturbs a version that's already out:

* Editing a published proposal creates a **new Draft version**; the published link and PDF keep showing the published version until you publish again.
* Signed, approved, and funded versions are terminal; further changes land on a fresh draft.

### 7. Version history and restore

1. Open the **project panel** (folder icon) and click **Version history**. Versions are listed by date; a project with both a homeowner proposal and an insurance claim lists them separately.
2. Click a version to open it in the preview.
3. On an older version, click **Restore Version**. Restoring copies that version's content into a **new** version at the top of the stack (summary "Restored to …") rather than rewinding history, so nothing in between is lost. Restored the wrong one? Restore again.

### 8. Troubleshooting common issues

* **My edits disappeared.** Edits stick only when you save; **Discard**, closing the tab, or an AI regeneration before saving loses them.
* **I edited but the customer still sees the old one.** Expected — edits create a new Draft. Publish it and the same link updates.
* **The editor won't let me save.** Every estimate needs a name and at least one line item; every line needs a description and a unit price. Look for highlighted fields.
* **I can't type a value the field won't hold.** Some template labels and fields are fixed by the proposal layout. Ask the AI in chat, or adjust the layout under [Proposal layouts](/features/proposal-layouts).
* **Does manual editing cost tokens?** Manual edit mode doesn't; asking the AI to edit does ([How tokens work](/plans-billing/how-tokens-work)). Republishing an edited insurance version in the same format carries no new publish charge.
