# Changing your plan

This article walks through what happens when you change your XBuild plan — upgrading, downgrading, or switching between monthly and annual billing — and what the review step shows you before anything is charged.

You must be logged into XBuild as an Administrator to change plans. Plans live in **Settings → Billing**.

#### 1. Start a plan change

1. Open **Settings → Billing** and find the plan cards.
2. Use the **Billed yearly** toggle to pick your billing interval — the toggle sets the interval for every card at once.
3. Click the plan's button — **Upgrade**, **Downgrade**, or **Switch to yearly/monthly**, depending on the direction of the change.

#### 2. Review the change before checkout

Before you reach the payment screen, XBuild shows a review dialog that spells out the shape of the change — what changes, when it takes effect, and what the commitment is at list price. Nothing is charged from this dialog; clicking **Continue** takes you to the secure Stripe screen, which always shows the exact amount before you confirm anything.

What the dialog tells you depends on the change:

* **Upgrading (same interval):** the upgrade is **immediate** — you see the new rate, the new token allowance, and your new member seats, and your renewal date stays the same. Stripe shows the exact prorated amount for the rest of your current period on the next screen.
* **Downgrading (same interval):** the change happens **at your next renewal**. Nothing is charged today, and you keep your current plan's benefits until the renewal date. If your team has more members than the smaller plan allows, XBuild blocks the change until you remove members — see Troubleshooting below.
* **Switching from monthly to annual:** this is a **12-month plan charged up front, today** — not a per-month payment. The dialog shows the full-year total, the 20% annual discount on its own line, and reminds you that the month you've already paid is credited against the charge. You receive the entire year of tokens up front.
* **Switching from annual to monthly:** the change happens **at your annual renewal**. Nothing is charged or credited today, and the unused portion of an annual term isn't refunded. The dialog also shows what giving up the 20% annual discount costs over a year, and your remaining tokens stay available until the renewal date.
* **Subscribing for the first time:** the dialog summarizes your first charge — the rate, tokens, and member seats for a monthly plan, or the full 12-month total with the annual discount broken out when **Billed yearly** is on — so the billing interval is clear before you reach checkout.

Tip: If you meant to pay monthly and the dialog says "12-month plan charged up front," your **Billed yearly** toggle is on — close the dialog and flip it off before clicking the plan button again.

#### 3. If you already have a change scheduled

When a downgrade or an interval switch is already scheduled for your renewal date, starting a new plan change shows a warning first: continuing **discards the scheduled change**, even if you back out of the payment screen without buying anything. Choose **Keep my scheduled change** to leave everything as it is, or **Continue and discard** to replace it with the new change.

#### 4. Troubleshooting Common Questions

* **I clicked Continue but changed my mind on the Stripe screen.** Closing the Stripe screen without confirming makes no change and charges nothing — with one exception: if you had a scheduled change and chose **Continue and discard**, that scheduled change is already released and won't come back on its own. Set it up again from the plan cards.
* **The dialog's price doesn't match what Stripe shows.** The dialog shows list prices; Stripe shows your exact amount after prorating the time you've already paid for. Stripe's number is the one you're charged.
* **I can't downgrade — XBuild says I have too many members.** A plan change can't leave your team over the new plan's seat limit. Remove members (or cancel pending invites) on **Settings → Members**, then try again.
* **I don't see a Downgrade button.** Only Administrators can change plans. If you're an admin and the card shows **Downgrade scheduled**, the change is already set for your renewal date.
